With the wide range of trenchless installation methods currently available, it is imperative that clients are provided with sound knowledge and guidance when selecting the appropriate method for their particular installation. However, more often than not, best suited methods are not utilised, meaning the potential for cost and time savings is never fully realised. Stuart Harrison from Edge Underground explains why.

When it comes to choosing the appropriate trenchless installation method for projects, companies are often left without the security of unbiased knowledge regarding construction options from their contractors. The reality is, there is a wide range of trenchless options out there, with some being better suited to particular project conditions than others. Factors affecting suitability include the type of project, the ground conditions, specifications within the tender and many more.

Contractors that only offer one particular installation method are obviously going to tell you all of the positives their construction method offers – but they’re unlikely to tell you about any of the negatives. It’s a limited view that doesn’t allow the project manager to consider the bigger, overall picture, and the danger is that the most appropriate trenchless method won’t be selected.

As a trenchless sub-contractor offering a range of trenchless techniques, this is where Edge Underground can step in and provide a different approach.

A model with an Edge

Edge Underground has operated as a specialist microtunnelling contractor for a number of years. However, this year the company has introduced a unique partnership model, whereby the company engages trenchless professionals to operate as franchisees of the company. Partners are able to call on the Edge Underground team for support; but they are given the freedom to bring their own individual expertise to the job site.

By adopting this new model, the company has been able to offer the companies it works for a range of trenchless installation models beyond the traditional microtunnelling, such as auger boring and pipe jacking.

Stuart Harrison, Managing Director of Edge Underground, says that his new business model is already benefiting clients by providing contractors with a range of trenchless options, delivered in an unbiased manner which allows contractors to truly compare ‘apples with apples’.

“Since expanding the range of trenchless installation techniques we offer, when applicable, we now quote on a range of techniques when tendering for new work,” said Stuart.

“This allows contractors to learn more about the pros and cons of the different installation techniques, and contractors can be confident that they are receiving an honest, unbiased appraisal from Edge Underground. We don’t have a preference over which technology is used – we just want the job done well the first time.

“By gaining information about a number of techniques from a single source, contractors can confidently make an assessment on the best technique for their job, based on a number of factors, including price, environmental impact, accuracy and more,” he added.

Broader horizons

Steve Mitchell is one of the newest members of the Edge Underground team, and he agrees that the new business model enables the flow of quality information between client and subcontractor.

“Clients are given information about the complete range of benefits and challenges associated with every trenchless method we quote on. Rather than steering clients in any one direction, we provide a detailed account – and costing – of how each technology will work for them,” said Steve.

“Under Edge’s partnership model, we all have a role in the company’s future and success. This means we all buy into production, problem solving, development of machinery, job preparation and most importantly client satisfaction, which helps ensure future works,” he added.

Mr Mitchell’s expertise extends across a range of trenchless methods, including auger boring, microtunneling, pipe jacking and horizontal directional drilling (HDD) is testament to this newfound diversity and scope of the company’s capabilities.

Mr Harrison is proud that Edge Underground now has the ability to share insight into each trenchless installation method, and assist clients with choosing the best installation method for their needs.

No job is too big or too small, and with bases across Australia, Edge Underground is available to quote on jobs nationwide.
